How to Become an Athlete for Special Olympics of Howard County
Are you interested in becoming a Special Olympics Maryland Howard County athlete and participating in an upcoming sport? Complete the steps below.
Step #1: Check Eligibility Requirements
Eligible athletes are all children and adults, at least eight-years-old, with an intellectual disability, a cognitive delay, or a closely related developmental disability. There is no maximum age limit. Children ages six and seven may participate in Special Olympics training, but may not compete. All Special Olympics programs are offered at no cost to our athletes. Eligible athletes have functional limitations in both general learning and in adaptive skills. This typically includes all individuals with intellectual disabilities, combination deaf-blindness, autism, traumatic brain injury, and most individuals with cerebral palsy and specific learning disabilities.
Step #2: Complete Athlete Application for Participation and Health History Form
All persons who meet the above eligibility requirements must first complete the Athlete Application for Participation and Health History Form (a.k.a. athlete medical history form). This form must be completed once every three years. If your medical history form is expired, download the Application for Participation and Healthy History form. Mail the completed form to SOHO, 8970 Route 108, Suite A-1, Columbia, MD 21045. Athletes cannot practice unless we have a valid medical form, signed by your physician, on file.
Step #3: Register for a Sport
SOHO will launch CompFit, a competitive fitness program that can be done 100% virtually. The general program provides both a training and a competition experience for athletes interested in fitness. Participants will each select three fitness events from a list of 15, will train in those events and then compete based on the degree of improvement they have in the event. The program is described in detail here as well as videos describing the fitness events to select from. Participants MUST have current medicals.
To register for CompFit, click the button below and fill out the form. You will be asked to read the Athlete and Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct. Both the parent/guardian and the athlete will acknowledge reading the form by clicking on a checkbox. You will then complete the form, pick a sport to participate for the current season and click on the Submit button to send in your registration. Please ensure you get a “Thanks for Registering Your Athlete” on-screen message after clicking Submit.
