About Special Olympics of Howard County

Special Olympics Howard County (SOHO) is a volunteer-driven organization that provides a year-round sports training and competitive program for over 900 Howard County children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in 22 sports programs – Alpine skiing, athletics (track&field), basketball, bocce, bowling, cheerleading, poms, hip hop dance, cycling, distance running, flag football, golf, Motor Activities Training Program, pickleball, powerlifting, snowshoeing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and Young Athletes. Several programs have multiple layers starting with skills to advanced athletes. Programs are run by coordinators, coaches, and many volunteers, including a large cadre of student volunteers.

To help bring Special Olympics athletes into the larger society under conditions whereby they are accepted, respected and given the chance to become useful and productive citizens.

To provide continuing opportunities for athletes to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
