Dear Athletes, Parents, Coaches, Volunteers and Friends of Special Olympics,
It is with profound sadness that I report the passing of our long time Assistant Director, Marilyn Miceli. She bravely fought breast cancer for the past three years and died peacefully at home Saturday evening.
As most of you know, Marilyn was a force to be reckoned with in our organization. She was part of our leadership group for the past 30 years, dedicating so much of her life to ensure the success of Special Olympics. She was tireless and selfless, never wanting accolades or awards, but focusing on ensuring that our athletes had amazing opportunities through sports. She was elected into the Howard County Recreation and Parks Hall of Fame in 2014 and received the Special Olympics Howard County Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025.
Family and friends can visit at Witzke Funeral Home, 4112 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21043 on Tuesday, November 18 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A mass will be held at St. John Evangelist Roman Catholic Church – Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia, MD 21044 on Wednesday, November 19 at noon. Marilyn’s obituary can be read by clicking here. Memorial donations can be made by clicking here.
While we are all heartbroken at this news, we can be thankful that Marilyn was part of our lives. Her wish would be that we continue to make the program that she helped establish and nurture, to be strong and vibrant for the current and future generations of Howard County Special Olympians.
Bob Baker, Director
